Position the camera in front of your subject and place your brightest light to the left or right of the camera. This creates a shadow instead of flooding your subject with light, making it look flat. If you’re short on gear, you can use a lamp, bright window or any other natural source you may have at your disposal.
If you really want things to stand out, try using the diagram below to set up your next shot with a fill light and a back light.
Know that things aren’t always perfect the first time. It may take a little tweaking and adjusting but you’ll ultimately love the final product. Experiment and go crazy!
