It was further refined and popularized in the 1950s with Irving Klaw (the guy who took all those hot dominatrix photos of Bettie Page) associating the act with pinups. By that time, materials were being produced that were more BDSM-friendly and intended for play, not for industry use.

In the 1970s and the following decades, huge communities erupted dedicated to BDSM practices, including clubs, classes and demonstrations on how to properly engage in a "scene" using toys to instill maximum pleasure.
