Okay, back to class but I'm wearing this to teach you.

I don't live too far from the beach, and grew up going to the beach a lot. I love swimming, looking for shells, and the sound of the ocean.

Does sand get everywhere? Yes.
Is it good I'm barely wearing any clothes at the beach so sand brushes off easily? Also yes.

Going to the beach as a leisure activity is actually a relativity new phenomenon. In the 19th century, spending time in salty air and water was considered a treatment for tuberculosis. And melancholy, rickets, leprosy, gout, impotence, tubercular infections, women problems and “hysteria”. Or maybe just summarized as really just needing a vacation.

Initially, women would be fully dressed at the beach, submerging into the water using a special wooden device to "dip" them. I didn't have time to research why they had to use a lifting device to get them into and out of the water but if I I had to venture a guess it's probably because of the layers of gowns they wore over a corset and I bet that got really heavy when wet.

In contrast the men, of course, were nude.

The sand would get EVERYWHERE. In the multiple layers of clothing they had and was a difficult feat to get it all out. Thank god they finally came up with bikinis like a century later!
