On this day in history, the Battle of Gettysburg ended after 3 days of intense fighting, with the Union claiming the victory over the South. Considered a turning point in the American Civil War, the grounds were turned into a burial ground where, just a few months later, Abraham Lincoln delivered The Gettysburg Address.

If you're not familiar, The Gettysburg Address is only about 200 words long, and spoken over about 2 minutes, the speech took a hold on a crowd of 15,000 onlookers and subsequent generations as one of the most significant speeches in American history because of it's content, and delivery. Allegedly, Lincoln pulled the speech out of his pocket, looked it over, slowly folded it and put it away, and spoke without his notes.

Anyway, that particular battle had heavy losses - allegedly more in that single battle than in the entirety of the American Revolution against the British.
