Let me share one of my favorite mobility exercises with you: the resistance band shoulder rotation!
I have hypermobile shoulders, which is great for weird sex positions but honestly terrible for contact sports and sometimes for powerlifting. My left shoulder is particularly susceptible to injury. Playing rugby for a few years didn’t help. It’s also partly why my squat is weaker than I want it to be — as soon as the weight gets above 180lbs, my left shoulder starts to freak out and my form breaks down.
My powerlifting coach started programming a bunch of physical therapy and mobility exercises for my shoulders, and this move is my favorite.
For those of you who ask why I do so much upper body work, now you know! You can’t train lower body properly with squats etc. unless your upper body strength can support it. My shoulders are weak from (YOU GUESSED IT) years of stress due to my pre-reduction boobs, as well as having shitty posture for most of my adolescence.
Getting “big” has never been a concern nor a fear of mine. I like the way I look with more muscle mass, but in this case it’s about health and practicality rather than aesthetics. It’s a myth that women who lift will suddenly look like bodybuilders. I would have to very intentionally train like that to look super duper buff. The way my body looks now is after 3 years of consistent training, and as you can see I still have lots of soft curves. 🥰
